I can't answer for all schools. When I attended school, it was. . . a little like this. The dorms, the atmosphere. But it's almost as though - filtered through a lens in a story. Something very silly.
Well, anything can be the gateway to a demi-plane if you know how to set it. I've seen it done so it's almost, uhm, a magical safe, where you can store things if you know it's there. But there's no reason it couldn't be a gateway to a larger place, and a person could travel through.
I'm a little bit novice at it, but for mine I've devised a gateway that can be placed inside a wardrobe, or the side of a wall. Or even a little smaller, but not as small as a book. And then you go inside and it's a tower that can house and feed a large number of people.
Despite my vast knowledge, there are certain gaps in my learning. And even my friend Mr. Mollymauk couldn't assist me with this one, but I wondered if you were the scholarly sort who might know these things.
