... Honestly, I'm not even sure anymore. Some kind of constant war between chaos and stability? [ it's derisive, and he does not explain what stability means, really. ] Six years ago, we were called to another world to save both it and our own from darkness. And it's... kind of been on and off fighting the same fight since.
[ wait until he tells caleb the youngest were like, seven, ]
... Yeah. [ he can't deny that! especially not after that memory. ] But we don't do it because we were chosen. We do it because we're people who can do something about it. If we have the power to help, then it's the right thing to do.
... It's always possible to say no. We weren't chosen because we had to help, but because we had the capacity. Any one of us could've stepped back from it at any point. There's been more chosen since, as well.
[ at first, yamato doesn't think anything of the tiefling looking like molly, because he's not racist and doesn't assume everyone who looks the same is the same person. but when it becomes clear they're speaking to him like he is, still, in that memory, he can't help but grow confused and worried.
... and then it ends, and he doesn't feel like he's learned anything at all of what happened to get them there, and he's left blinking at caleb ]
... I thought Molly was...? Who was that?
[ an evil version of a friend is actually kind of relatable, who would have thought ]
[He frowns a little, rubs his jaw, uncomfortable.]
Lucien. Uhm. Mollymauk. . . he died. Some time ago, from my perspective. There’s magic that can bring someone back, but. . .
This gets a little into who Molly is, I’m afraid. He always had amnesia, woke up at one point without any memories. Whoever brought him back. . . they brought back the person who had that body before Mollymauk.
[Caleb shrugs a little, slightly uncomfortable to be doxxing so much about Molly, but feeling like the alternative of letting anyone believe this person is Molly would be worse.]
I don’t know if he always was. No one starts off a bad guy, after all. And people can change. Experiencing different things. . . I’m not exactly a person to judge anyone.
Something happened to him, I think. The reason Mollymauk woke up without any memories in the first place. He got involved with some nasty entities, things that will eat away at your brain. My friend described it as. . . like an animal who becomes rabid, they aren’t the same as what they were before.
So he is crazy, and dangerous, and we’ll have to kill him. But maybe he was different at some point, more like Molly? I don’t know.
[ yeah he is kind of starting to feel bad about learning so much about molly that maybe molly does not even know? so even though he's still got questions he just nods in acceptance, and, quietly; ]
That can't be easy. [ a kind of apology for making Caleb have to relive it and explain it, because that sucks! and was personal!! before he adds; ] ... Does Molly know?
We let him decide for himself how much he wanted to know, and he didn't.
[He sighs.]
So much for that. But at least. . . we have this much in common. We chased this man to the ends of the world because he had the face of our friend, only to find no one else cared to stop what he was doing.
Everyone in the world has problems they are dealing with. Someone at the ends of the world, on a madman's mission. . . easy to think he may not succeed anyway, it has nothing to do with me.
From the ones we spoke to, we got a little assistance - weapons, resources - but only one person we asked was willing to actually venture there with us into harm's way.

[Why are the forces of stability recruiting such tiny children.]
You and your friends are capable, but. . . it's a lot to have on your shoulders?

... Yeah. [ he can't deny that! especially not after that memory. ] But we don't do it because we were chosen. We do it because we're people who can do something about it. If we have the power to help, then it's the right thing to do.

That's good, at least. If there are others who can help as well.

... It kind of sounded like the person who had his body before was a [ he struggles for how to put it, but settles with; ] well-- bad guy.
[ he doesn't know how to say "the dude did a whole crazy villain speech". which he has experience with but it's weird seeing from molly? ]

[A conflicted sigh.]
Not this one specifically, but. . . about Lucien. And some of the conflicts we’ve had with him.

... It's probably better for him to know, but... I don't know. It's messed up, to learn things like this.
[ when is this place NOT messed up and invasive, though, is the undercurrent to the conversation. ]

Yeah. That's pretty much all the time for us, too.
