Heh. That's - that's more than Samatoki ever did for me, when I was there. [ piece of shit. he doesn't sound angry, though, just - voice taut, tense, unhappy. ] That was all I wanted, you know? When Samatoki knocked me out, I thought... I had always thought he was a good person. The best kind of person. So I thought he'd fight for me. For - for the world that we knew. And he didn't. He turned around and shoved my face in it.
[ ... ]
I don't think that's how Rupert is. [ ichiro looks at the rice in his hands, squeezing a little bit too hard. too tight. ] I just - I can't think it's the same. I can't let myself feel that way.
What do you think about the theory that people here are being made to kill, here?
...I think it's the only thing I can think of that explains anything.
[ he pauses for a moment in where he's shaping another rice ball, voice low as he explains. ]
Like... our expulsions, you know? They've been based off of a video game. Someone controls a character to make them punch and hit and smash. And everyone's had to move in ways they didn't want to for that. Not to mention when we get dragged off to our dorms, and up to the trial in the morning, and - plus the scripts that were going around - saying shit like the plot wasn't 'exciting enough'.
[ a little darkly, there. it is in fact a little terrible how well that player cyoa fit into the overall plot of this game, yeah.
he nods, there. ] ...Kon said he got to have a conversation with Vi that wasn't -- [ a pause. ] ... it wasn't [ and airquotes ] "Viola". It was the real her. Or - something like it. She broke through for a second and said we were on the right track.
Something a little like that happened to me with Chad. He had a headache, said similar things about being on the right track, but getting - and then it cut off.
And Luke passed out the other day, and said his name wasn't Luke.
So that just leaves confirming it with Sally, too.
[ ichiro shifts where he's standing, a little jittery - but, he seems a little more resolved than upset, now, looking down at his giant pile of food. ]
We gotta break whatever cycle's on this place. I wanna know what the hell the bear has to do with it, too.
[ jesus. he manages to calm himself down after a second, reaching up to rub his forearm across his eyes. its the kind of laughter where you've just had an exhausting, long day, and you're not sure whether to laugh or cry, so. he hiccups, at the end and manages to bat off any of the emotion, nodding as he shapes one last one. ]
Yeah - yeah, man. Of course. Here.
[ with a shake of his head, ichiro turns around and brings him a plate. these are filled with grilled salmon! delicious. ] Take as many as you want. Think I probably went overboard.
Yeah? [ good...he hasn't lost his touch. ichiro finally sets the plate down and goes to go get something to wash his hands. ] They're my younger brother's favorite kind. He's - playing sports, so I try to make him stuff with lots of protein to take to school so he's not just eating junk from the store all day.
[ it's the little things like that. caring for other people is in his blood. doing a dumb little act like making a ton of food has helped calm his temper, and having nice company has really helped, too. he's not feeling great, but determined, maybe, and calm. clear headed. what you really need, in a place like this. ]
I made a couple different fillings. If you, uh. If you ever don't feel like eating any of the cafteria food, or if you have something you really miss from home, I can probably cook it for you.
[ he will finally take one to eat for himself, too, though he mostly just tosses it from hand to hand, for the moment, tension loosening a little further with the familiar subject. ]
I'm their guardian. We spent a lot of time living in an orphanage until I was old enough to officially take charge of them and get us our own place - just a couple years ago, now. I had to really save up my money to do it, and I earned a lot of it from working in restaurants in Ikebukuro, so I got pretty decent at cooking, so... it worked out.

. . . It was more than that. He agreed to press the switches for the hostages at the same time, to take that risk.

Hard when people we care for don't share our dreams of a better world.
[. . .]
No, he wasn't like that. There must be a reason, so I would say that theory has merit.

Who the fuck made us their action figures?

[He listens, scratching a little at his forearm.]
It's the Dorm Heads, too. They've had their memories altered in some way, I think.
